FHIR Business System Analyst

Analytical Services Multiple, United States

Description

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Business Analyst who specializes in clinical data standards and interoperability. In this role, you will act as the vital link between clinical stakeholders, data modelers, and engineering teams. Your primary focus will be defining the requirements for acquiring external data via CommonWell and ensuring that complex clinical data—structured via FHIR and CDA—is translated into clear, actionable business specifications.

Core Responsibilities

1. FHIR Specification & Business Translation

  • Lead the business-aligned interpretation of FHIR resources, ensuring that technical "resource-level decomposition" meets the needs of clinical end-users.
  • Document detailed data requirements that bridge the gap between healthcare workflows and technical FHIR structures.

2. Analytic Schema Requirements

  • Collaborate with Data Modelers to define requirements for analytic-friendly schemas, ensuring the transition from nested FHIR to flattened datasets maintains clinical relevance.
  • Identify reusable patterns and common data use cases to streamline future data acquisition efforts.

3. Interoperability Framework & Alignment

  • Ensure all data acquisition strategies align with the Serve Layer requirements of the organization.
  • Advocate for and document standards for reuse across clinical domains, ensuring a consistent data "language" for the enterprise.

4. CDA/FHIR Mapping & Curation

  • Utilize CDA domain knowledge to provide insights into how external documents (C-CDA) should be curated and normalized.
  • Develop strategies to accelerate curation, ensuring that external data from CommonWell is integrated into the internal patient longitudinal record with high fidelity.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Interoperability Expertise: Deep understanding of HL7 FHIR (R4/R5) and C-CDA document structures.
  • Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with CommonWell Health Alliance or Carequality connectivity and data exchange patterns.
  • Data Literacy: Ability to read and interpret JSON/XML structures and a strong grasp of SQL for data validation.
  • Clinical Curation: Experience with clinical terminologies such as LOINC, SNOMED CT, and RxNorm.
  • Communication: Proven ability to translate complex technical specs into simplified business value propositions for executive stakeholders.

Key Deliverables

  • Business Requirement Documents (BRD): Detailed mapping of clinical business needs to FHIR/CDA data elements.
  • Data Curation Backlog: A prioritized list of clinical data elements requiring normalization and mapping.
  • User Acceptance Criteria: Defined validation steps to ensure flattened FHIR datasets meet the accuracy standards of the clinical business units.
  • Gap Analysis Reports: Documentation of discrepancies between source CDA documents and target FHIR resources.
